Money Flow

Money Flow — frequently asked questions

Is my bank data uploaded anywhere?

No. Statements are parsed and stored entirely in your browser (IndexedDB) — nothing is sent to any server, there is no account and no sign-up. Clearing the browser's site data removes everything, so use Export backup if you want to keep your history.

Which statement formats and banks are supported?

CSV, XLS, XLSX and PDF statements, including password-protected Excel files — the password is asked for and used locally. Statements from major Indian banks (SBI, HDFC, ICICI and similar layouts) are detected automatically; if a file isn't recognised, a manual column-mapping step lets you import it anyway.

How does automatic categorization work, and how do I fix mistakes?

Each transaction's merchant is extracted from the narration (UPI/NEFT/IMPS text) and matched against built-in rules. To correct one, change its category in the Transactions tab — the tracker remembers your choice and applies it to that merchant in all future imports. The Uncategorized banner helps you clear unknowns in bulk.

Why don't my totals match my bank balance?

Two common reasons: transfers between your own accounts count as both money in and money out unless the 'Exclude transfers' toggle is on, and the tracker only knows about the statements you've imported — gaps in the date range mean missing transactions.

How do I back up my data or move it to another device?

Use Export backup in the header menu to download a JSON file with all transactions, accounts and learned categorization rules, then Restore it on the other device or browser. This is also your safety net before clearing browser data.

What counts as a recurring payment?

Charges from the same merchant with a similar amount at a steady interval — monthly subscriptions, EMIs, rent, SIPs. They're detected from your history automatically and shown in the Recurring panel, which is also what the cash-flow forecast is built from.
